I have a hunch that Karan's fundraiser isn't so much about actually raising funds as it is about framing Israel as a victim in need of defense. As a Jew, I have a sense of this from our western-Jew cultural heritage: Israel wasn't really created for Jews. I mean, it was, but UK/US imperialism would not have done it just for us. Those powers used the horrors of the Holocaust as an excuse to create a permanent outpost in the Middle East. And I think think we (western Jews) bought into the propaganda used to do that. Spin forward 80 years, and here we are, where many of us know what a sham that was, but many still buy into it, and are happy to let our government keep using us as an excuse for Israel and its continuing occupation and genocide (hence the continued insistence on pushing the narrative that anti-zionism and antisemitism are synonymous). Throwing a fundraiser for genocide is probably a very effective part of maintaining the myth. I don't know if Karan is Jewish or not, but it doesn't really matter. Modern Zionism isn't actually about Judaism; it's about imperialism and colonial occupation (and genocide). Thus the scam: Poor wittle Israel needs our help protecting itself from those big bad meanies!
