I knew that I wanted to write something about why you are not what you buy on today’s delight but I’m finding it difficult to put words on paper. Metaphorically, of course. I’m typing this, not writing this on paper, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to read it right now.
I think the reason why I’m having a tough time trying to get my thoughts down is because my job sucks up all my brain resources. Brain resources is what I call my ability to think. I made it up. Please don’t look it up.
Nonetheless, even though my job prevents me from spending my time on things I like, I have to do it because you know, capitalism lol. If you don’t work to get money, you don’t have things you need to live, which funnily enough, brings me to the topic at hand. No, I don’t think it’s funny that we have to work to live. I think it’s funny because talking about something sad brought me back to the purpose of this post.
Okay yes, you are not what you buy.
As I previously stated and as you already know from your personal experience, we have to work to get money to live. Unless you are Prince Harry. Then you don’t have to work to live. You can just shit talk your evil family, pretend to be a rebel while doing absolutely nothing, then you get a pile of money.
However, making enough money just to feed yourself and meet your basic needs is great but we have been taught that we should aspire for much more. You should want to have enough money to buy certain shoes and certain clothes that are not accessible to most people.
The things you own determine how you are treated in society and, as a result of that, we are programmed to believe that we are what we buy.
Well I’m here to tell you that you are so much more than that lipstick you bought at Sephora.
Onto the delights…
The poem + coloring
I colored this short poem to tell you why you are not what you buy and you should boo anyone who tells you otherwise.
You are not what you buy you are who you want to be if capitalism didn’t constrain your imagination to toiling for survival and picking ourselves over each other everyday to survive
I colored this short poem because the words came to me and I just wanted to do it.
all the times i said i love you i meant it all the times is said i want us to be free i meant it all the times i said fuck the police i meant it
The art
This art was actually inspired by last week’s delight!
The video
I made this video about how we will never find joy through consumption but only through community and love.
The Book Recommendation
I’m once again recommending salvation by bell hooks. I couldn’t find a link to a free copy so if you do, please share it in the comments.
That’s it for the delights!

Your favorite anarchist comedian,
I sure do agree about how awful it is that we have to work for corporations to survive, and that material things do not bringing us happiness! That has been the case with me big time. Thanks for the bell hooks recommendation. I have a book of hers called "where we stand: CLASS MATTERS" that's on my reading list. Keep up the great work!
