Sorry y’all, I took a break last week because life is hard sometimes and I needed a break from the news. Onto the news…
News that made me feel how I felt when I tried to watch Friends
I talked about it on TikTok but I’ll say it again. The corporate media’s coverage of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine is a reminder to everyone that there are two true truths in this universe. The first is that we live in a global racial hierarchy and the second is that I will never be able to tell Creed and Nickelback apart. The former truth has been proven more often than I’ve been tempted to throw out the whole shelf of Oreo thins in a grocery store. Who do they make those for? Who ever looked at an Oreo and thought, you know what would make this better, less icing and less cookie!
Anyway this is not about the cookies, this is about the fact that every corporate news website I go to has completely dedicated its whole homepage to Ukraine. Meanwhile there has been no mention of Palestinians being killed by Israeli forces, no mention of the US bombing Somalia, no mention of Yemen. The corporate news coverage is just a reflection of how wars are treated by western governments. They are only bad when they happen to white people. Even Biden, a man who has proven time and time again that he loathes immigrants more than Gen Zers hate skinny jeans, is protecting Ukrainian immigrants currently living in the United States from deportation. Get this, the Republicans praised Joe for his empathy towards his fellow whytes. Turns out Republicans are only cool with refugees who look like they would have been cast on Friends. This news made me feel how I felt every time I attempted to watch an episode of Friends, like something racist was happening.
News that reminded me of the Fast and Furious franchise
Journalists and freedom fighters who participated in the George Floyd uprising in Minnesota are still being surveilled by “local and federal law enforcement agencies” under a program called Operation Safety Net (OSN). Calling a program meant to target people who are fighting for freedom Operation Safety Net is so evil because Operation Safety Net sounds like something good. It sounds like a program created to protect middle-school me from my bully. While officials have lied that the program was shuttered last year, OSN is still on and is being referred to as OSN 2. Much like any of the Fast and Furious movies, this is a sequel that no one asked for but is still being funded. This news does not surprise me at all. Why would the United States government let people who tried to make this settler hellscape a better place roam around freely? This sends out the message to everyone out there that it’s okay to fight against tyranny and oppression, the United States’ most treasured values. If you don’t believe me that those are the US’ most treasured values, I’ll leave you with this little fact that I just learned. “Research has shown that police are 3.5 times more likely to use force against left-wing protesters than against right-wing protesters.”
News that made me decide to call anyone who names themselves a progressive, anti human
REI workers in the SoHo store have unionized despite the company’s resistance to unionization. It’s so interesting that companies like REI always claim to be “progressive” until they are forced to make some progress. Why is it that anyone who uses that word to describe themselves is often against progress? I’m looking at you Nancy Pelosi. At this point when someone says they are progressive, I assume that they are anti human. Anyway, as a surprise to no one, when REI was aware of its workers' plan to unionize, the company launched an anti-union campaign. Workers were forced to listen to management telling them that the union would interfere with the relationship between REI and it’s workers. Yes, that is the point of the union, REI! To interfere with exploitation. As per usual any news of unionization makes me so happy and it should make you happy too. So happy that if you don’t have a union at your workplace, you start one.
That’s it for the news, but don’t leave yet…
I just finished Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Talents, a sequel to Parable of the Sower. Now this is a sequel that everyone asked for and you should definitely read it.
