I’ve been reading the Motorcycle Diaries because I’m in that in between place where I’m ready to start reading fiction but not fully ready yet. I go through phases where I only want to read non-fiction and then phases where I only binge read fiction. Is binge reading a thing? If it’s not what else do you call staying up all night to finish a book or canceling your plans during the day to keep reading?
Anyway, this is not about my binge reading.
Motorcycle Diaries is Che Guevara’s diary he wrote while traveling through the Americas with his friend. What’s notable to me about his journey is they had to depend a lot on the kindness of strangers to feed them and house them.
The book reminded me of when I was growing up in Kenya people would knock on our door and just ask for water. We gave it to them and it wasn’t a big deal.
It also got me thinking of how amazing it would be if we lived in a world where people could just open their door to strangers or neighbors in need.
For this week’s delight I’m sharing work that I’ve written and colored that remind me of people being there for each other. Onto the delights…
The poem
I wrote this poem at a time when I was referring to myself as an empty soul because I am dramatic. It’s called empty souls…shocker!
Empty Souls
Empty souls clinging to each other
with desperate hope that they can free each other
from nothingness
together they might be something
they cling together and imagine a world filled with something
not just anything
but joy, love, and affection
they cling together with hope that they can merge together
in doing so fill each other so they are no longer empty
The art
I colored these three pieces because I firmly believe that we have everything we need in ourselves and each other to be free.
That’s it for the delights!

Your favorite anarchist comedian/poet/social critic,
Thanks, Marcela. Love the poem and everything else in this piece!
It would be an amazing place indeed - where everything and everyone thrived and bloomed...
