I was one of those unfortunate souls who got dragged into watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta for many seasons. By dragged I mean I would out of my own will turn on the television then feel very guilty about watching the show. I felt guilty because I knew the Real Housewives is definitely Black capitalist propaganda but not guilty enough to stop watching. It was the only time I was guaranteed to see Black women on TV. Sometimes I don’t see us at all so I got desperate, it’s not my fault. Okay maybe a little, but I don’t feel like taking any blame right now.
I bring the Real Housewives up to tell you about this moment from the show that I promise is very significant to today’s delight. It goes like this. A housewife confesses to telling a very vile lie about another housewife. After the confession, the wronged housewife cries out,“the lies, the lies”.
The lies, the lies is what I want to scream every day living in this capitalist dystopia where everything is a lie.
I think the first biggest lie I was ever told was that the country I was born in, Kenya, was independent from its former colonizers. Turns out neo-colonialism is alive and well. The second biggest lie that I was told is that just because I have a vagina I was a girl. The third biggest lie I was told was that knowing how to diagram sentences was important. Okay the third one was not as big of a lie, but I did have a lot of sleepless nights worrying about where the preposition goes. Does anyone know where it goes?
This week’s delight was inspired by all the lies I’ve been told. Onto the delights…
The Poem
I call this poem Sea of Lies because we live in a sea of lies. From being told money is real and people don’t matter. To being told Obama was a good guy. The lies are everywhere.
Sea of Lies
Sea of lies I see you hiding under another sea of lies
that lies underneath another sea of lies
that is covered in more lies
that is sauteed with an extra bit of lies
that is smothered in lies
that is absolutely and completely dripping with lies
soaked in liess
lifted by lies
fried by lies
then sold to us on a piece of paper covered in lies
it’s a lie and a lie so deep that it dominates our lives
to the point that we believe it’s the truth
when a lie becomes a truth
it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a lie
i see you for what you are
sea of lies
The art
This poem inspired me to color these pieces
The Video
Talking about money isn’t real reminded me of this video I made a long time ago discussing the origins of money. Buckle up, the thing you were told about money is not true.
The Book Recommendation
Read David Graeber’s Debt: The First 5000 Years for more mind blowing truths about money and the history of debt. It’s not as fun as the real housewives but it’s the right type of propaganda. Find the free book here.
That’s it for the delights!
