Hi, it’s been a rough week. I hope you are taking care of yourselves. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the IOF killing Palestinians who were waiting for food. Onto the news…
News that made me scream inside
When I first read about the IOF massacring the hungry Palestinians who were trying to get food in northern Gaza, I had no words. Which is saying a lot because I always have something to say. Having words is a major part of who I am. So much so that my parents say I started talking as soon as I left the womb.
I couldn’t talk because I was overcome by grief. I just kept thinking about all those hungry children I’ve seen on my Instagram feed.
I put my phone away. I stared at the ceiling.
I cried.
I screamed inside. The last time I screamed in my apartment was because I saw a mouse and someone called the cops. I wasn’t in the mood for cussing out the police so I didn’t let the screams out.
The grief turned into anger. All I could think to myself is that this evil dystopian world must end. I’ve been feeling this dystopia acutely since I stopped using marijuana. Who thought it was a good idea to be sober in a dystopia?
I thought about Frantz Fanon’s words. “For the colonized, life can materialize from the rotting cadaver of the colonist.”
I thought about the people in Sudan who are also starving while the one who massacres them trots around the globe palling around with other “leaders”.
This dystopian world must come to an end.
We have to bring it to an end.
I read an article the other day that said Joe Biden needs to “change his Israel policy fast”. Not to stop the extermination of Palestinians, but to win his presidential election. How morally bankrupt are we as a society for someone to write that a genocide needs to end because it’s going to cost someone an election? Elections that are a fabrication, a smokescreen to keep the masses fooled that we live in a democracy when we don’t. My household growing up was more of a democracy than this country and my parents didn’t let me go to sleepovers even though I wanted to.
It’s exhausting feeling powerless when we are powerful. We can end this now, but we have to collectively decide to end it. We have to collectively trust each other enough to know that if we were all to stop giving this war machine our labor, we would be taken care of. Most of us don’t even like our jobs so this would be a celebration for most.
However, we’ve been convinced that we need to listen to those who oppress us on how we should free ourselves. When it’s clear that all the “acceptable” tools to protest injustice will not work. Joe Biden talking about a potential ceasefire while eating ice cream should let you know that the ruling class isn’t scared of us.
Why would they be?
The ruling class has murdered over 30,000 people in Gaza, displaced millions in Sudan and Congo. Committed other atrocities that aren’t prominent in the headlines but are prominent to those who are harmed. Yet we still ask the capitalist stooges to stop the killing, stop the oppression.
The capitalists have convinced us we need them. They’ve convinced us that we need them to protect us from each other. We buy the tools to surveil ourselves and each other. I’m talking about you Amazon Ring owners. How was the government able to convince you to buy your own surveillance tool? They taught you that you should fear someone who steals your package over someone who steals your life. I bet you wouldn’t be obsessed with making sure someone didn’t steal your dildo if you were able to live the life you wanted instead of the life you’ve been told you have to live.
Listen to Frantz Fanon when he says “we must first and foremost rid ourselves of the very Western, very bourgeois, and hence very disparaging idea that the masses are incapable of governing themselves. Experience has in fact proven that the masses fully understand the most complex issues”.
You know you have better ideas than Trump. You know you have better ideas than Joe Biden. Nancy Pelosi doesn’t even know how much eggs cost.
The ruling class doesn’t have any good ideas because all their ideas are founded on oppression and extraction.
If we want Palestine to be free, we have to free Palestine.
If we want Sudan to be free, we have to free Sudan.
If we want Congo to be free, we have to free Congo.
If we want to be free, we have to free ourselves.
That’s it for the news, but don’t go yet
The quotes are from Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. If you haven’t read it, you should. I’m reading it again.
If you want to learn more about the lives of Palestinians being displaced by the genocide in Gaza, head on over to We Are Not Numbers.
Please keep going to protests for Palestine. Please keep talking about Congo, Sudan, and colonialism.
We have everything we need to free each other. Keep fighting for a better world. We can do it.
