Hiii, we made some really tasty dahl yesterday. Today I’m sharing my feelings about the Met Gala happening. Onto the news…
News that made me say it’s time to unplug from the sounds of the empire
The Met Gala happened because the people who attend the Met Gala are not the same people who care about genocide. If you were to draw a Venn diagram of people who care about the genocide in Gaza, the people who went to the Met, and the people whose job it is to maintain this evil empire, the people who went to the Met and the people whose job is to maintain evil would be in the same circle. The people who care about genocide would be a completely different circle that doesn’t want anything to do with that other circle.
People on the internet are really angry at all the celebrities for wearing their ugly outfits on the red carpet while there are multiple genocides happening. I get it. There’s a lot to be angry about there. However, one thing people are either forgetting or not realizing is that it is the celebrities’ job to keep pretending things are okay when everything is terrible. It is their job to maintain capitalism, settler colonialism, and everything you hate. Getting angry at celebrities for trying to distract you from the evils of settler colonialism is like getting angry at the barista in a coffee shop for taking coffee orders.
If you don’t want coffee, stop going to a coffee shop. If you don’t want celebrities to wear a smokey eye and prance around a red carpet like nothing is happening, STOP GIVING THEM YOUR ATTENTION. Sorry I yelled, I think the multiple genocides and spring allergies are getting to me. If you see me crying, it’s because of the pollen and living in a murderous empire.
Celebrities are manufactured by capitalists to sell us things including the idea that being successful is wearing a dress so uncomfortable that someone has to carry you. There’s a reason why Jay-Z is famous and you have to read a book to know who Assata Shakur is or be on the right side of social media. Yes, there is a right side of social media. That’s the side where everyone agrees Jay-Z is not a revolutionary and enjoys the video of Joe Biden falling up the stairs.
I know it’s hard to avoid celebrities because they are everywhere. Beyoncé is even selling us internet services. I’m not saying close your eyes and ears every time you see a Swiftie walking by - though you might want to. I’m saying maybe take time to find alternative art from artists who aren’t here to keep the evil American empire going. It’s much easier to turn on Spotify and let it feed you whatever it wants and much harder to find local artists. Between the crying and screaming into the abyss, there’s not much time to curate your favorite indie music or movies.
However, culture is a significant mechanism for control. That’s why the capitalists have co-opted art and only allow their minions who they venerate to give us art. If we want to build a better world, we have to unplug from the sounds of the empire. We must engage with art from artists who are here to serve humanity and not line the pockets of Jeff Bezos. Yes, this includes Beyoncé.
That’s it for the news but don’t go yet
Speaking of finding art that doesn’t support capitalism, here’s a joke I wrote about capitalism in 2021.
