Now let’s talk about news that made me angry, sad, and glad.
News that made me angry
Fourteen people have died this year at Rikers prison as a result of what government officials and journalists are calling inhumane living conditions. This news makes me angry for multiple reasons. I will list a few but there are so many more. First, calling a prison inhumane is as redundant as calling an ocean watery. The only way prisons can ever be humane is if they are all shut down and turned into community gardens that grow a lot of marijuana. For this reason Rikers and all prisons should be shut down. Second, the amount of power that prison guards have over imprisoned people is absolutely disgusting. Prison guards have been taking time off which means that there aren’t enough staff to make sure imprisoned people’s basic needs’ are met which has led to suicides. Now I’m all for workers’ rights and I think workers should do as little as possible at work, but I don’t consider prison guards to be workers. Prison guards are evil class traitors. Lastly, despite the fact that most of the people in Rikers haven’t been found guilty of a crime (this doesn’t matter, no one should be in prison), the Mayor of New York refuses to release people even though it would reduce overcrowding which has led to people being forced to poop in bags. Mayor de Blasio obviously doesn’t care about imprisoned people and is like, what’s wrong with poop bags? Amazon workers use them.
News that made me sad
Taxi drivers in New York City are on a hunger strike because they have been saddled with hundreds of thousands in debt from loans they took out to buy taxi medallions and the city isn’t helping them. Which isn’t surprising because the only helpful thing the City of New York does for its non-wealthy residents is nothing. Instead of helping, the city is offering a non-solution that would only offer up to $20,000 in debt relief when the average debt is hundreds of thousands of dollars. Which makes sense because the city’s plan to fight global warming flooding is to pay toddlers to empty flooded homes with toy buckets. This news makes me sad because New York City caused this problem by inflating the price of taxi medallions so as to make up for a budget shortfall, proving that whenever the government doesn’t have money, the first step is to treat vulnerable people like a piñata filled with cash. The city made 855 million dollars from inflating the prices of medallions and now taxi drivers who are mostly immigrants are dealing with the consequences. It’s not surprising that the ploy to raise revenue by scamming immigrants was launched under Bloomberg because billionaires are the best scammers.
News that made me glad
Colin Powell died and people talked about how horrible of a human he is. This makes me happy because I’m so tired of people acting like dying turns a bad person into a saint. A bad person dying doesn’t make them a good person, it just releases a dark soul back into the universe. Colin Powell’s credits include pretending like the My Lai massacre didn’t happen and lying to the United Nations that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The latter lie led to millions of Iraqis being murdered. Colin obviously did other terrible things because he was a professional war criminal, and for that, we should remember him as an example of why we shouldn’t celebrate representation for representation’s sake. Black people should not seek to be represented in the war criminal profession and publicly wishing Colin Powell a terrible afterlife sends that message.
That’s it for the news, but don’t leave yet…

This week on TikTok I told everyone to just say no to capitalism, and why we should stop calling it a worker shortage.
I’m currently reading As Black As Resistance which talks about what we need to do to achieve Black liberation. Hint, Colin Powell ain’t it. I can’t find a link to a free copy but you can buy it from this anarchist publisher. If you really need a free one let me know and if you find a link to a free one let me know.
If you enjoy coloring and want to make it revolutionary, you can find really cool anti-capitalist coloring sheets here.
