Happy Sunday! I finished my very first screenplay and rewarded myself with eating candy for breakfast.
Now let’s talk about news that made me angry, sad, and glad.
News that made me angry
Despite objections from the general public Atlanta’s city council moved forward with razing a huge chunk of a forest and building a $90 million police playground referred to as cop city because it will bring cops’ fantasy of being Rambo to reality. This news makes me angry because it reminds me that we don’t live in a democracy. If the people who you supposedly represent tell you they don’t want something and you do it anyway, it’s time to accept that elections are just a fun event where they trick us into thinking our opinion matters so we don’t rise up in rebellion. Elections are like one of those play kitchens that are built for children; children get to pretend that they are doing the cooking while the adults make food with real fire. We are the children and the politicians are the adults. Sorry I don’t like it either and that’s why it makes me so angry.
News that made me sad
The Rikers prison chief medical officer is calling for outside help because the inhumane situation in the prison that has led to suicide amongst those held in cages by the state. This makes me sad because prisons are always inhumane and should not exist. The mere fact that someone who has been desensitized to the inherent violence of prison is actually calling for help is deeply disturbing and should not be ignored. Sometimes I really wish we could just Bastille every prison in the so-called United States of America.
News that made me glad
Starbucks workers in Buffalo, New York are attempting to form a union! This makes me very happy because this might be the beginning of a world where your soy latte comes with less exploitation. Yes, the people working at Starbucks will probably still misspell your name because they don’t have time to ask for the correct spelling of your name and make you your latte so you don’t miss the bus again. Also, I say less exploitation because even though unions do improve worker conditions, the only way exploitation ends is if workers own the means of production. Starbucks of course is not very happy about this because management just doesn’t understand why their “partners” (Starbucks calls its employees partners) would ever want a union to help improve their work conditions when some workers are juggling five cups of coffee while taking drive through orders because of understaffing. So I’m really happy for Starbucks workers and you should be happy for them too.
That’s it for the news, but don’t leave yet…
In case you missed it this week on TikTok I talked about why you should be an abolitionist and the expiration of unemployment benefits.
I’m currently reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. The setting is a post apocalyptic world in 2024 which feels very possible.
