Happy Sunday! I released the very first Feel the News Short Film, Amazon World. Thank you patrons and everyone who has sent me money via Venmo or PayPal. It helped a lot.
Now let’s talk about news that made me angry, sad, and glad.
News that made me angry
If at any point during the month of July you said, it’s hot as hell, you were probably right because July was the hottest month ever recorded. As much as I love the heat, feeling the sun burn my skin just a tiny bit, this news makes me very angry because not enough is being done to make sure we don’t live in a future hellscape where the only perk is we can bake brownies in our cars. Instead the police are surveilling water protectors who are attempting to stop a pipeline from being built and Joe Biden just asked OPEC to produce more oil. It’s almost as if the government is daring the ocean to turn into a large seafood boil. It’s like the US government read the IPCC report stating that we pretty much have to stop fossil fuel production in ten years in order to avoid catastrophic climate change and said, “Well that was a fun read, now let’s get more of that black gold from the ground.” This Hot Girl July that we never asked for also makes me angry because oil companies that profited from turning our home planet into an unlivable hot rock will not have to pay for any of the damage they caused. What’s the most maddening is I’m not surprised by this at all, I always expect the state to pick money over people and that’s why I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, the US should change its motto from “In God We Trust” to “Fuck the People, let’s get this money”.
News that made me sad
Haiti was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake and so far over 700 people have been confirmed dead. This makes me very sad because this is another devastating event for a country that has to deal with a lot of suffering because their original sin of freeing themselves was punished by France, the United States and other western powers for years. As far as I’m concerned, France should be paying the tab for all of Haiti’s natural disasters because we all know that’s the least you can do for someone after destroying their lives. But alas, the real world is not as just as your high school teacher claimed it would be. France isn’t paying its large debt so Haiti is left at the mercy of organizations that wronged the Haitian people in the past. Imagine being so desperate for help that you ask the person who punched you in the face to help you get back up. One thing I will say is don’t give a dime to the Red Cross until they can explain what they did with the $500 million donated to aid Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake unless you love funding the lives of the wealthy. I mean technically we are all funding the lives of the wealthy by paying taxes and having our labor stolen every time we go to work, but you get what I’m saying. If you want to help Haiti please donate to the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund instead.
News that made me glad
10 activists stopped work on the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) in West Virginia for 8 hours by locking themselves to construction equipment. This makes me happy because nothing makes me happier than people realizing we are our own saviors. Finding a vegan ice cream parlor is a close second, but vegan ice cream will not prevent the MVP from cutting down forests so that’s why it’s a close second in triggering joy from my soul. Actions from activists have delayed the MVP pipeline for years and so that should be a lesson to all of us that if we come together and fight for our planet, we will win.
That’s it for the news, but don’t leave yet…
ICYMI…This week on TikTok I talked about the origin of the markets and posted a new joke about Obama.
I’m currently reading Mariame Kaba’s We Do This ‘Til We Free Us. It has taught me so much about abolition as a practice and completely changed my perspective on self care and I highly recommend it. You can buy it from AK Press an anarchist publisher. (Sorry, I couldn’t find a free link for this one. Let me know if you do.)
If you want to follow what’s happening in Afghanistan, @asranarshism on Twitter is a good source.
If you like my TikTok videos and this newsletter and would like me to make more short films and can afford to support my labor, please become a patron. This is the only labor that brings me joy.
