Capitalism stifles innovation

Happy Sunday! I hope you got to enjoy the nice weather outside without sneezing from allergies.
Today I’m not going to tell you how to feel about the news. Instead, I’m going to share some thoughts about one of the many lies of capitalism. Uh oh she’s been thinking! I know, it’s very scary for me too, but read a couple more sentences in before you bail out. Last week I posted a video on TikTok where I called out NASA for giving 2.9B dollars to Elon Musk to take astronauts to the moon and someone mentioned something about science not being the problem, but monopoly.
It’s so cute to me that people think that anything existing in capitalism will not be completely co-opted by the rich. Nonetheless, someone responded to this comment by stating capitalism doesn’t lead to innovation, it slows it down, which pierces through the lie I told you I would talk about. The lie is capitalism is the best system to foster motivation. It’s not, unless you consider crying at work innovative.
Let’s just start with basic common sense. What does one require to be “innovative”? I would say, minimally, time and resources. Things I wish Elon Musk didn’t have access to. What does capitalism do? It steals workers’ time and manufactures scarcity so only a few have unlimited access to resources while others struggle. It’s really hard to come up with great ideas, outside of how to poop, when you are working for hours a day, while trying to hold your poop because you work for a monster who believes having bowel movements is not a human right.
I’m pretty sure Jeff Bezos read “Everyone Poops” and said, no they don’t. Also, when all your creativity and time is spent trying to find food or a place to sleep, you probably won’t have the time to spend inventing a new vaccine. So yes, capitalism stifles creativity because it only allows a tiny minority of people to have the time to be innovative.
And this is where I plug in anarchism. Anarchism offers a world free of an abusive hierarchical system which manufactures scarcity so workers are forced by corporations and the state to work in exploitative conditions. I know they say anarchists are scary but we aren’t, I promise. We care a lot about people and that’s why we don’t like the state. The state enables corporations to hurt people.
That’s it for my thinking, but before you leave…
If you are interested in learning more about Black anarchism, this is a good introduction.
If I haven’t scared you yet and you’d like to learn more about me, I recently wrote a piece in Shado-mag about why I tell the news in 59 seconds.
If you have a moment, please send me a quick yes or no if you liked the structure of this issue. I’m thinking about doing more of these instead of my regular news, which you can catch on TikTok.
