Happy Sunday! Let’s talk about TikTok’s censorship…
The News
I used #abolishthepolice on my TikTok videos this week because police are trash that we should take out immediately. Imagine my surprise when I found out you can’t click on #abolishthepolice if it’s used on a video. Go ahead, try it. If it seems unbelievable, try it again.
How should you feel about this news?
Not surprised. TikTok takes abolishing the police personally because when they say the police are here to protect and serve, they are referring to corporations like TikTok, not you silly. TikTok, like any other corporation, is terrified of police abolition because police abolition means Black liberation and Black liberation means the end of capitalism.
I get it. If I was really gaining from a system, why would I want it to change? There was a broken vending machine at my workplace that would always give me two Snickers instead of one and I never reported it to the office manager. Also, I was pissed when they fixed it. The thing is, if you are used to eating two Snickers for the price of one, then it’s really upsetting to have to pay for the second one. Capitalism allows corporations to get two Snickers for the price of one. By Snickers, I mean workers; by price, I mean workers’ wages.
But what does abolishing the police have to do with Black liberation?
Well, everything. If the constant barrage of police killing Black people doesn’t make it clear to you that abolishing the police will lead to more freedom for Black people, policing in the United States evolved from patrols of enslaved people. The police in this country were created to keep Black people in bondage and that is still their job. It’s really hard to be liberated when someone is either trying to enslave you (put you in a prison), control your movement, or kill you.
But what does Black liberation have to do with ending capitalism?
Well, everything. Capitalism depends on a racial hierarchy because by maintaining a racial hierarchy, poor white people aren’t as pressed to fend off their exploiters (capitalists) because even if they are poor at least they are white. Yes, whiteness is a hell of a drug. So that’s why the fight for Black liberation has to be a fight against capitalism. TikTok censored #BlackLivesMatter for the same reason it censors #abolishthepolice. If Black lives matter, then anything that prevents Black lives from mattering has to go. And that main thing is capitalism.
Quick Summary
TikTok censors anything that can lead to Black liberation because TikTok loves capitalism and capitalism cannot exist if Black people are truly free. Essentially TikTok doesn’t want the vending machine to be fixed, and Black liberation is the vending machine technician.
