The News
Yesterday marked the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s murder by police officers Myles Cosgrove, Joshua Jaynes, and Brett Hankinson.
How should you feel about this news?
Very saddened because nothing has systemically changed since last summer when we marched the streets to protest Breonna Taylor’s execution.
Sure, the corporate media has been touting Biden’s presidency as the beginning of a new era, exalting him like he gave us the $2000 he promised.
But we are still in the era of police occupation and nothing has been done to prevent the same thing that happened to Breonna from happening to another person. When we said abolish the police, they heard paint “Black Lives Matter” on roads and do nothing else. Even Minneapolis’ promise to reduce the police force has not been honored.
Worse, it seems that the only thing that state governments have learned is state sponsored murder isn’t the problem, it’s the people protesting state sanctioned murders.
In Kentucky, where Breonna was murdered, they just passed a law criminalizing insulting the police if insulting the police leads the police to beat your ass. Yep, the state of Kentucky will send you to prison for 90 days if the police assault you because you shouldn’t have made them angry enough to assault you. Honestly, I wish I had the imagination and confidence to be as evil as the people who came up with that bill. Not to be left out, the city of Detroit is suing the protesters for defamation among other things. That’s right, you read that correctly, turns out calling out police violence is defamation.
So yes, the state is doing nothing to prevent police violence because the police are part of this racial hierarchy thing, which I will not get into now because I did plenty of that on last week’s newsletter.
But do not completely despair…
The work to abolish the police and prison industrial complex is being done by organizations like Critical Resistance. Mariame Kaba and Ruth Gilmore are tirelessly challenging us to imagine a world free of prisons and police. Join them because abolishing the police is the only way to get justice for Breonna Taylor and other victims of police violence.
That’s the news, but don’t leave yet….
I’ve been reading Who Do You Serve, Who Do You Protect? Police Violence and Resistance in the United States and I’ve learned so much about specific cases of police brutality and murders. This book is a great one to share for anyone who still isn’t convinced the police are a source of pure evil.
I’ve always hated Cuomo and I’m glad everyone is finally on board. Breakthrough News gives you a great rundown of Cuomo’s history of being a bad human.
My dream is to expand the Feel the News show beyond TikTok and create an anarchist late night show to make more sketches like this. If you’d like to support me in creating a late night comedy show for anarchists, become a patron or donate.
